I photographed these M5A1 Stuart light tanks at Arlington and Willows Run Airport near Detroit. Cadillac upgraded the engine (previously radial) of the M3 Stuart and so many changes were made to the hull that a new designation had to be given. These later versions were the M5 Stuart with larger welded hulls and expanded turrets to accommodate radio equipment. In the African campaign, some M5 Stuarts were used to create M5 Kangaroo artillery tractors in circumstances where Universal Carriers were unavailable.
