The original designation for the aircraft, which was used during World War II, was the P-80 (P for pursuit). After 1948, the Air Force changed the designation from “P” to “F” to stand for “fighter”
The P-80 was the basis for the T-33 Shooting Star trainer aircraft and the F-94 Starfire
