I photographed the German Krupp K5 280mm Rail Gun “Leopold” at the Ordnance Facility; Fort Lee
The 70-ft 8-inch barrel could lob 550-pound shells roughly 31 miles. American soldiers dubbed these German rail guns “Anzio Annie”
The Krupp’s massive size inspired the US engineers to scale up the T1 240mm Rail Gun Prototype to create the M65 280mm “Atomic Annie” Gun that is transported by two T10 Heavy Gun-lifting Trucks rather than relying on the vulnerable rail system.
There also is a Model 1895 12-inch Railway Gun displayed elsewhere on Fort Lee.
