I photographed these M3 Halftrack examples at Fort Lewis, Oshkosh, Willow Run and the Flying Heritage Collection, as well as a nice example participating in a re-enactment during the Gathering of Fortresses at Willow Run Airport near Detroit. The M3 was a lengthened version of the M2 Half Track built by White, Autocar and Diamond T.
On the M2, the rear light covers and mud flaps protrude beyond the personnel box, and on the M3 the box was extended by 10 inches to be flush with the light frames.
When International was added to the production of Half Tracks, their line was given the name M5 Half Track, visually distinguishable from the M3 by the “straight” fender line and the rounded corners of the one-piece back.
The Half Tracks are given the -A1 specification when the raised gun position is added over top of the cab.
