I have seen ARV defined as “Airborne Command and Reconnaissance Vehicle” and also “Armored Reconnaissance and Command Vehicle”
The M114 was a lightweight, low-silhouette vehicle, designed to complement the M113 APC in command and reconnaissance roles.
