USS Bunker Hill Bell

I photographed this ship’s bell from the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) on display at the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville, OR. The Bunker Hill participated in the capture of Okinawa, and her aircraft helped sink the Japanese battleship Yamamoto in April 1945. The next month, Bunker Hill was hit by two kamikaze planes armed with 250-pound bombs that exploded in the hangar deck after punching through the flight deck. The incredibly damaged aircraft carrier reached the US under her own power and returned to service just after the Japanese surrender. This is one of the smaller bells (Bunker Hill had three) and weighs approximately 300 to 400 pounds. The largest bell was about 1,200 pounds and has been fitted to the USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) guided missile cruiser.
