34-Star Flag (1861-1863) “Gettysburg Flag”

I photographed this 34-Star Flag (1861-1863) “Gettysburg Flag” at the Quartermaster Museum; Ft Lee VA

The 34th star represents Kansas’ entry into the Union

This is the primary flag carried by Union troops during the first two years of the American Civil War. Despite the southern secession, no stars were ever removed from the national flag, reflecting the Union’s stance that secession was illegal.
