I photographed these 1936-39 White Motor Co. Model 706 Yellowstone Bus examples in Yellowstone and Red Lodge
These are similar to the National Parks Bus in Glacier National Park with some differences:
- Seating Capacity: Glacier’s “Red Jammers” were typically configured to hold 17 passengers, whereas Yellowstone’s yellow busses held 14 passengers because a rear bench was removed to accommodate luggage.
- Body/Doors: Glacier versions featured four doors on the right-hand side. Yellowstone units required specific regional adaptations, such as a driver-side semaphore turn signal to comply with Wyoming laws.
- Color Scheme: Yellowstone busses were painted a distinctive park yellow, while Glacier’s busses featured a ripe mountain ash berry red and black scheme.
- Fleet History: Glacier kept and continuously maintained most of its original fleet (operating 33 of its original 35 busses), whereas Yellowstone sold off its entire fleet in the 1950s before later repurchasing and modernizing a small handful on newer chassis
I have also photographed multiple 1926 Lincoln Touring Cars that were used for special customers at Yellowstone as well as the 1925 White Model 15-45 Yellowstone touring bus.
