I photographed these AIM-4 Falcon missiles in South Dakota, Delaware, Virginia and Florida.
In 1962, the U.S. military standardized its naming conventions, at which point the entire Hughes Falcon family was rebranded, changing “GAR” (Guided Aircraft Rocket) to “AIM” (Air Interceptor Missile). Consequently, the GAR-1D became officially known as the AIM-4A.
The AIM-26 Falcon was a larger, more powerful successor to the AIM-4.
