I photographed the patrol-torpedo (PT) boat PT-305 “USS Sudden Jerk” at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.
Some indication these were called “Higgins 78” due to the length. The museum says 69 of the 531 PT boats were lost in service during WWII.
