I photographed this General Electric Mk 2 Re-entry Vehicle at the Sands Space History Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. These were used on the Atlas and Thor ballistic missiles. The blunt body deflects most of the heat by creating a shock wave in front of the missile, and absorbing whatever heat does get through into the “heat sink” thick metal face.
