Calbraith Perry Rodgers crossed the country in 1911 in attempt to claim the $50,000 Hearst prize for transcontinental flight in 30 days or less. He left Sheepshead Bay, New York on Sept 17 and had only reached Kansas City when the 30 days was through. He continued on, reaching the endpoint with to a heroes welcome in Pasadena CA after 49 days. He pushed on to Long Beach CA to reach the Pacific Ocean after logging 4,321 miles in 82 hours of flying time.
