I photographed these Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden (“Violet Lightning”) examples at the Smithsonian, NMoUSAF and NAS Pensacola. This represents three of the four remaining land-based NIK2-J in existence, the last one being in Japan. There are also three Kyōfū floatplane examples, two of which are in storage. The -J indicates it is a land-based variant, and Kai means modified.
