Some of the North American B-25 Mitchells I have photographed, including the only two B-25 examples displayed in the United Kingdom (RAF museum and IWM Duxford). The NMoUSAF has a nice display depicting Jimmy Doolittle discussing the mission with fellow Raiders as the plane is prepped on the deck of the USS Hornet. Other B-25s also represent the famed mission as well. Gen. Eisenhower’s personal B-25 is at the SD Air Museum outside Ellsworth AFB.

This is the heavily modified VB-25J used by Ge. Dwight D. Eisenhower when he would visit other leaders and troops at the front. The armament was removed and windows, seating and bunks were added as well as a folding table that spanned the width of the plane. Extra radio and navigation equipment were installed, and bulletproof spare fuel tanks.

When I photographed it again in 2019, it had been repainted to represent B-25J 43-4064 “Li’L Critter From the Moon” of the 488th Bomb Squadron, 340th Bomb Group of the USAAF’s Twelfth Air Force in the latter stages of World War Two. I noticed the fuselage strafing guns were not present after the re-paint.
