On August 19, 1967, Capt. Stephen W. Pless and his crew flew into heavy enemy fire to rescue four wounded American soldiers near Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. Pless received the Medal of Honor (the only Marine aviator to do so in the Vietnam War) for courageous actions in maneuvering the damaged aircraft to safety.
